The Covid-19 pandemic has affected everyone, and while we are all affected differently, there is something very unifying about it. One night I had the thought that I hadn’t met anyone new in a really long time. I’m the kind of person that strikes up random conversations in the lobby and enjoys back and forth with strangers. I felt like a lot of the videos and ads I was seeing on TV, encouraging people to wear a mask and do the right thing, were very clinical or medical. While this messaging is of course important, a piece of New York felt like it was missing from them. So when Governor Cuomo announced his PSA competition, I partnered with a producer friend to make a video.
We focused on the both sad and important point that if we don’t wear masks and take the warnings seriously, we won’t be meeting or seeing anyone, anytime soon. The amazing thing about this project, was that everyone we asked jumped in pro-bono. We had a SAG actor read the script, a production house edit for free and all of our footage came from family and friends. While we didn’t win the competition, being able to work together while remote and create something powerful felt like we already won.
